Year 5 2018 - 2019

Mrs Rowlinson

Miss Collins

Welcome to Year 5!

This half term we are investigating Flight and Forces!

We will be observing flight in nature including how birds fly and how they are adapted for that purpose. We will use this knowledge to inform our investigation into all sorts of flying objects including kites and planes!

Our inspirational text this half term is Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick.

What if the sea began to rise . . . and rise . . . until the land began to disappear? A brilliant futuristic fantasy by an acclaimed new writer.

Global warming has caused the sea to rise until cities are turning into islands and civilization is crumbling. Ten-year-old Zoe Black was left behind on Norwich by accident when her parents escaped in the last supply ship to visit the island. Zoe discovers a small rowboat and keeps it a secret until she can set out alone on the great sea to find her parents. She lands on tiny Eels Island, where she must survive in a nightmarish world run by wild children and their boy-leader, Dooby. Zoe and a boy called Munchkin escape and cross the sea to the mainland, to find not only Zoe's parents but a new family and a new world.

Miss Collins and Miss Rowlinson read this book over the Christmas holidays and they couldn't put it down - it was so gripping! We are excited to explore this book together as a class.

Homework is posted on the VLE every Friday, and will support the mental maths skills we are practising for our weekly test.

Spellings are now sent home by your child's spelling group teacher every other Monday. Your child will work on their group's letter pattern for two weeks and then they will be tested on the Friday. Spelling books must be in school each day.

Daily reading at home is expected, making sure that children are mindful of their new ZPD score when selecting a book to read. To encourage children to read books by alternative authors and in different styles of writing, we have a weekly recommended read in class. In addition to this, you can use the website links below to help your child to find new books and different authors that your child may be interested in. We have seen that their reading spectrum has been broadened and this is having a positive impact on their reading ability, vocabulary range and writing.
