Year 2
Mental Maths
HT4 W3 Homework
In mental maths this week we will be focusing on Rounding and Adjusting to Subtract. To prepare for our test on Friday our sessions in class will be structured like this:
Monday
What numbers are friendly to work with? Numbers with a zero or a five in the ones column are generally easier to work with. (10, 20, 30, 15) We will look at different numbers and see what we have to add/subtract from them to make them ‘friendlier’. We will also remind ourselves which part of a subtraction calculation is the minuend, the subtrahend and the difference.
Tuesday
Today we will discuss what this symbol means: -
We will also practise subtracting friendly numbers, such as: 27 – 10.
Wednesday
We will look at calculations and discuss how we can round the subtrahends to friendlier numbers. 34 – 9 could be made easier by rounding the 9 to 10. We would then teach adding the one back on to find the answer to the original calculation.
34 – 9 = ?
34 – 10 = 24
34 – 10 + 1 = 25
34 – 9 = 25
Thursday
We will discuss how we can approach questions such as 34 – 8. use the strategy we have been working on all week to help us practice solving calculations, such as:
47 - 9 =
42 - 8 =
74 – 18 =
We would solve this by doing:
42 – 8 = ?
42 – 10 = 32
42 – 10 + 2 = 34
42 – 8 = 34
