Guided Reading

Please read ‘Popcorn Surfing’ E book on Oxford Owls Website.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/12990.html

Before reading the book, focus on the front page, read the title and ask; “What do you think this book will be about?”, “People can’t normally surf on popcorn, where do we have to go to go surfing?”

Read ‘Popcorn Surfing’ aloud. Encourage your child to segment the sounds in each word if needed. Once they have read the sentence, encourage them to reread it without sounding it out, to develop fluency.

Look at the story map at the end of the book- ask your child to retell the events in the story- “What happened next?”

Literacy

This week we will be linking our Literacy work to a wonderful story called ‘The Storm Whale’ by Benji Davies.

Please watch/read it together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czczPkmP988

In the story (at 1:27 of the video), Noi discovered a little whale washed up on the sand. Can you remember what Noi did? He poured water over the whale and carried the whale on his trailer before putting it in the bath. He took care of the whale for a short while before Noi and his dad put it back in the sea. Would you have done the same things as Noi? Would you have done anything differently?

Imagine that you had found a little whale washed up on the sand. What would you have done? How would you have helped the whale?
We would like you to write about what you would have done to help the whale.

Green: List 4/5 things you would do if you found a whale on the sand

e.g. splash it with water

      phone the coastguard

Amber: Write 4/5 sentences about what you would do if you found a whale on the sand

e.g. I would splash the whale with water.

      I would phone the coastguard.

Red: Write 4/5 sentences to explain what you would if you found a whale on the sand. Try to use ‘because’ or add a bit of extra information.

e.g. I would splash the whale with water to help keep it cool.

I would phone the coastguard to come and help rescue the whale.

Don’t forget to use the sentence checklist!
