Hello Reception, we hope you had a lovely weekend! Here is the learning for today.

Literacy

This week’s book is called ‘The Everywhere Bear’ by Julia Donaldson.

Watch the video up to 1:03: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNp_uSODq60

Talk to the children about what we have learnt so far in the very beginning of the story:

  • Some facts about what the teacher looks like
  • The teacher’s name [Mrs McAllister]
  • The name of the class [Class One]
  • The names of the children in the class including the bear
  • Where the bear sits

Have a look more closely at the picture of Mrs McAllister (see PDF document).

What else would you say about Mrs McAllister and what she is wearing?

Try to use describing words to finish these sentences out loud:

“She is wearing…”

“She has…”

You may want to share some sentences from the bottom of the picture of Mrs McAllister

As the teacher (parents at home – you are the teacher), draw attention to yourself and ask the children what they notice about you and what you’re wearing. Encourage them to use describing words whilst using the sentence starters from above. Create a spider diagram of these facts.

Explain to the children that they are going to writing about their teacher (the one that is teaching them right now). Model using some of these facts and putting them into sentences, e.g. He has spiky beard. She is wearing shiny shoes.

Green: Write 2/3 sentences to describe what your teacher looks like and what they’re wearing. Start your sentence with “He/She has…”

Amber: Write 3/4 sentences to describe what your teacher looks like and what they’re wearing. Start your sentences with “He/She has…” and/or “He/She is wearing…”

Red: Write 5 or more sentences to describe what your teacher looks like and what they’re wearing. Start your sentences with “He/She has…” and/or “He/She is wearing…”

Phonics

Recap phase 3 sounds using flashcars on phonics play: https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/flashcards-time-challenge

Tricky and high frequency words (see document attached) Have 9 words on the board- read each one- can you say them in a sentence?

Teach: Sorting sounds. Say aloud what pictures you can see. Select the correct pictures that match the sound for each slide. *in school use powerpoint version.

Practise: Please see Phonics. Monday. Practise Activities for all the below activities

Green activity Play read and race board game- can be played alone- children circle the words they land on as they play. Can attempt to get to the end before a timer runs out. Repeat to beat their time

Amber activity Secret words- write down the first sound you hear for each picture- read the secret word you have made!

Red activity Complete amber activity and write a sentence that includes each word.

Guided Reading

Please use 'Is It Quick?' from our new online bug club books. You will need your child's log in details and you can access the website via our link: http://www.ashdene.cheshire.sch.uk/page/bug-club/74620

Focus on the front page, read the title and ask; “What do you think this book will be about?”, “The book is called ‘Is it Quick?’, can we make a list of things that are quick. Try to organize the list into different categories of animals/transport/other using different colours/columns when children give their ideas. Ask children why they think you are organizing the ideas that way. Back to the book cover – ask “Do you think a penguin is fast?”

Read ‘Is it Quick?’ aloud in turns. Encourage children to segment the sounds in each word if needed. Once they have read the sentence, encourage them to reread it without sounding it out, to develop fluency.

At page 8/9 ask children “Do you know what a heron is?”

Can you now draw something that is quick?

Maths - Subtraction

Monday – watch number blocks ‘holes’ episode https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08dmjsk/numberblocks-series-1-holes

ALL – find 3 of something, for example pennies, sweets and go through the PowerPoint of addition and subtraction up to the number 3. Use your objects to help you work out the number sentences you see. If you would like some practise of writing number sentences you can write these in to your books. Talk to the children about the differences between addition and subtraction for example when we add, the number gets bigger and when we subtract the starting number gets smaller.

Green –  Using the subtraction language document choose one of the activities to practise and develop talking about subtraction and ‘taking away’.

Amber – Using the subtraction language document choose 2 of the activities to practise and develop talking about subtraction and ‘taking away’.

Red – Using the subtraction language document choose 2 of the activities to practise and develop talking about subtraction and ‘taking away’. Write the number sentence that matches the activity you have done.

*Record your work by taking a photo and sending it to your teacher’s email address!
